A striking 18ct yellow gold Retro-era cocktail ring, centred on a large, luminous cabochon chrysoprase. Attributed to Cartier, Paris, and dating to circa 1940, the ring has the confident scale and glamorous visual language of the period: a richly coloured ornamental stone presented in a substantial, beautifully worked gold mount.
The chrysoprase is cut en cabochon, allowing its distinctive apple-green colour and softly translucent character to take centre stage. Its smooth, rounded profile is set within an architectural yellow-gold setting that complements the stone's vivid tone and gives the ring considerable presence on the hand. Bold, sculptural jewellery of this kind was central to the Retro aesthetic, when precious metals and vividly coloured hardstones were combined to dramatic effect.
The ring is unsigned, and any original inventory marks have rubbed with wear. However, it was acquired from a gentleman whose father worked in the Paris workshops, and closely comparable Cartier examples are documented. The attribution is therefore based on the ring's design, construction, provenance, and comparison with known Cartier pieces, rather than on a surviving signature.
A wonderfully expressive jewel of the 1940s, combining exceptional colour, sculptural goldwork, and an important Parisian design attribution. It would make a distinguished addition to a collection of Cartier-attributed jewellery, Retro-period design, or fine coloured-stone rings.
