Stourbridge glass water jug
7630
A very fine 19th century Stourbridge cut and wheel engraved large form glass water jug, probably Thomas Webb and Son circa 1880.
For more than 400 years, the Stourbridge district of the West Midlands has been synonymous with some of the world's finest glass. Rich local supplies of coal and fireclay made the area ideal for glassmaking, while generations of skilled craftsmen established its reputation for exceptional lead crystal, engraved glass and decorative art glass. By the Victorian era, Stourbridge rivalled the famous glassmaking centres of Venice and Bohemia.
Among its greatest names was Thomas Webb (1804-1869), who founded Thomas Webb & Sonsin 1837. Under the leadership of his son, Thomas Wilkes Webb, the company became internationally renowned for its brilliantly cut crystal, exquisite cameo glass and innovative iridescent wares. Master engravers, including George Woodall, created celebrated works inspired by the ancient Portland Vase, helping establish Thomas Webb as one of Britain's leading luxury glassmakers.
Today, Thomas Webb glass remains highly prized by collectors as a lasting symbol of British craftsmanship, artistry and innovation.
