A Georgian cut glass celery vase with scalloped edge, circa 1800.

Celery vases became fashionable in the Georgian and Victorian periods, when celery was considered an expensive luxury rather than an everyday vegetable. In the 18th and 19th centuries, celery was difficult to grow and often served as a status symbol at formal dining tables.

Tall, narrow glass vases were specially designed to display the stalks upright in water, keeping them crisp while creating an elegant centrepiece.

Early examples were made from hand-blown glass, while later Victorian versions featured pressed glass, cut crystal, and coloured designs. Celery vases declined in popularity during the early 20th century as celery became more affordable and widely available.
