Whitefriars glass bowl
Whitefriars glass bowl
7513
A large Whitefriars green knobbly streaky glass bowl circa 1960.
Founded in the 17th century, Whitefriars Glass became one of Britain's most celebrated glassmakers. Originally established in London near the Whitefriars district, the company earned a reputation for high-quality hand-blown glass and stained-glass production. In the 19th century, James Powell & Sons took ownership and expanded the business, supplying glass for churches and notable buildings across Britain.
During the mid-20th century, Whitefriars achieved iconic status through its colourful modernist designs, particularly under designer Geoffrey Baxter, whose textured "Bark" vases became highly collectible.
Production moved to Wealdstone in the 1920s before the factory finally closed in 1980, leaving a lasting influence on British studio glass design.
