French style upholstered stool

A French style upholstered stool with studwork originally retailed by Colefax & Fowler, circa 1960.
Founded in the 1930s by decorator Sibyl Colefax and later joined by the influential designer John Fowler, Colefax and Fowler became one of Britain's most celebrated interior decorating firms. The company helped define the classic English country house style, blending elegance, comfort, faded colours, and carefully layered antiques with practical living.
Fowler's philosophy of "quiet decoration" rejected rigid formality in favour of relaxed sophistication. Over the decades, the firm worked on aristocratic homes, embassies, and royal residences, while also producing renowned collections of fabrics and wallpapers.
Today, Colefax and Fowler remains highly influential, preserving traditional craftsmanship while continuing to shape timeless British interior design.
