A William IV mahogany side table with hinged lid and single drawer on ring turned legs, circa 1830.

William IV furniture, produced during the reign of King William IV (1830-1837), bridges the elegance of the Regency period and the heavier Victorian style. It is characterised by bold yet restrained forms, often crafted from richly figured mahogany or rosewood.

Popular features include turned and reeded legs, scroll-shaped arms, carved acanthus leaves, and rounded corners. Upholstered chairs and sofas became more comfortable, reflecting changing domestic tastes. Dining tables frequently featured pedestal bases, while sideboards displayed strong architectural lines.

Although the period was brief, William IV furniture is admired for its solid craftsmanship, practical design, and understated sophistication.
