A finely made Chinese celadon-glazed vase with relief-moulded decoration, dating from the 19th century. The elegant form is covered in a soft celadon glaze, its subtle green tone pooling gently around the moulded design and bringing depth to the decorative surface.
The base bears a six-character Qing dynasty Yongzheng reign mark, which translates as "Made in the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor of the Great Qing." Although the mark refers to the Yongzheng period of 1722-1735, this vase is a later 19th-century example made in homage to the celebrated porcelain of that reign.
Such retrospective marks were a long-established feature of Chinese ceramics. The finest wares of the Yongzheng period were greatly admired for their refined forms, luminous glazes, and controlled decoration, and later Qing potters frequently looked back to these celebrated imperial precedents.
