Georges Braque (French 1882-1963) L'Atelier de Braque, 1961 original lithographic poster printed by Atelier Mourlot.
Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a pioneer of Cubism alongside Pablo Picasso, together developing a fragmented abstraction that has influenced generations of artists. Working across still life, birds and flowers, he experimented boldly with colour, texture and collage throughout his career. His achievements include iconic stage designs for the Ballets Russes and a ceiling fresco,
The Birds, permanently displayed at the Louvre - the institution at which, in 1961, he became the first living artist to hold a solo exhibition there. This original lithographic poster, featuring beautiful hand-lettered type, commemorates that landmark exhibition, L'Atelier de Braque.
At age seventy nine Braque became the first living artist to exhibit a solo show at the Musée du Louvre. Braque was also famously commissioned to paint a ceiling fresco at the Louvre in 1953 - 'The Birds' is still on permanent display at the museum.
