Eight Nicolas de L'Armessin II Drawings
6881
Fabulous set of 8 original pen and ink drawings from the Costumes of the Trades series attributed to the circle of Nicolas de L'Armessin II, circa 1700.
Nicolas de L'Armessin II was a 17th century French engraver, best known for his series of imaginative costume prints titled 'Habit de Métiers' - Tradesmen's Costumes).
These satirical works depicted various professions as intricate, fantastical outfits made from the tools and symbols of their trades-such as a musician clothed in instruments or a printer wearing type blocks.
The engravings reflect both Baroque aesthetic sensibilities and a keen commentary on social identity and labor. Although little is known about his personal life, L'Armessin II's unique fusion of fashion, satire, and allegory has left a lasting impression in the fields of art and costume history.
