French chamber stick
French chamber stick
7376
A French 19th century white metal chamber stick circa 1890.
Chamber sticks are small, portable candlesticks designed for use in bedrooms before the widespread availability of electric lighting. Typically featuring a low base, a short holder for a candle, and a finger ring or handle, they allowed people to safely carry light through dark hallways or rooms.
Many chamber sticks also included a small tray to catch dripping wax and a socket or spike to secure the candle. Popular in Europe and North America from the 17th to 19th centuries, they were made from materials such as brass, pewter, silver, and ceramics.
Today, chamber sticks are valued as decorative antiques and historical artefacts.
