An early 18th century Flemish painted figure of St Nicholas on a painted plinth.

Saint Nicholas, born around 270 AD in Patara (modern-day Turkey), was a Christian bishop of Myra renowned for his generosity and compassion. Known as the protector of children, sailors, and the poor, he became famous for secret gift-giving, such as providing dowries for impoverished girls.

His selfless deeds inspired the modern figure of Santa Claus. After his death on December 6, around 343 AD, his reputation for miracles spread across Europe. His relics were later moved to Bari, Italy, where they remain venerated.

Saint Nicholas's legacy endures through acts of charity and kindness celebrated world-wide during the Christmas season.
