A remarkably well-preserved 16th-century Tudor forged-iron door knocker, an evocative survivor from the domestic and architectural world of early modern England. Hand-forged in iron, this substantial piece has a powerful, sculptural presence, with the irregularities and tactile surface that can only be achieved through traditional blacksmithing.
Door knockers were an essential feature of Tudor houses, inns, manor houses, and public buildings, serving as both practical hardware and a visible statement at the entrance to a property. Before the widespread use of bells, the sound of iron striking iron announced a visitor's arrival; consequently, the knocker was often positioned prominently and made with an eye to durability and decorative effect.
This example retains a wonderfully honest patina, with the surface wear and age-softened texture that give antique forged iron its distinctive character.
