18th century creamware bottle coaster
7454
A rare 18th century English creamware bottle coaster with pierced gallery circa 1770.
English creamware emerged in the mid-18th century as potters sought refined, affordable tableware. It was perfected by Josiah Wedgwood, who improved earlier earthenware by adding feldspar to create a light, creamy body with a smooth glaze.
Popular from the 1760s onward, it became widely exported, especially to Europe and America. Creamware's elegance and lower cost helped replace pewter and tin-glazed pottery. By the late 1700s, decorative techniques such as transfer printing enhanced its appeal.
Although later overshadowed by porcelain and ironstone, creamware remains an important milestone in British ceramic innovation and industrial production history.
